By Tony Thonesavanh and Sir staff
There’s a point in every man’s life when he realizes a T-shirt and sweatpants won’t suffice (dates, interviews, interviews that turn into dates, etc.).

Ryan is a sophomore in mechanical engineering and is what the shallow might call ‘fashionably challenged’ (and our staff, because we could not think of any other words to use). His typical outfit consists of a New York Yankees T-shirt, sweatpants and a pair of Nikes. Sir fully endorses this style choice if it’s not anywhere other than a night hanging out with the guys, but sometimes it takes more effort to show off your personality and look your best. His style needed an upgrade so our own Tony Thonesavanh decided to force lend his friend some Sir style advice.

1. Redo your “‘do”
Get familiar with the side-part style so classically portrayed in the hit show “Mad Men.” It’s been popular since … well, since man was born (or since Kennedy), and it’s back. All a guy needs is medium to long hair and his look is halfway there.

2. Ditch those white/black gym socks.
Throw on some unconventional or colorful socks. It will only gain you good attention. And maybe even more. (Tip: Try cuffing up your pants once or twice to show your socks off. A tight double-roll is best.)

3. Dress up like Dad.
Maybe not your dad. But a sophisticated look can pay off in subtle ways you may not expect. Trade in the sloppy and stand out by wearing a tie and tucking in your shirt. Just don’t be a douchebag about it. And stop raising your hand in class. You know who you are. (Tip: Mixing patterns is okay, no matter what your mom told you.)

4. Make it fit.
Go for a more body-conscious fit for your body type. This applies to pants, shirts and even shoes. Bulky jeans and shoes can ruin an outfit. (Tip: We’re not saying to only wear skinny jeans, but mix up the fit (bootcut, straight-legged, skinny, low rise bootcut) while still staying true to your waist and leg size. Remember, the first number on the tag is your waist, x, then leg length. Take the time to try things on.)

5. Be confident.
Nothing else is as important as confidence. A man with confidence is usually one of the biggest characteristics a partner will look for in another. Once you match your confidence with your new look, you will have everything you need to conquer the world. No, you’ll never be Obama, but you’ll look good doing it.
